Ask a Resume Writer: How Do I Tailor My Resume for Remote Work?

To score an interview for any type of position, it’s critical to adjust your resume to include the right industry keywords and highlight your most relevant achievements. However, if you’re applying for a remote position, or want to add recent work-from-home experience to your resume, you may be wondering, “How should I update my resume for remote work?”

We asked Jenna Sylvester, one of iHire’s Certified Resume Writers, for their advice.

What are the skills needed for a remote job resume?

“Being successful in a remote work position requires specific skills and abilities. Your next manager wants to know that they can trust you to work effectively from anywhere. In addition to the qualifications specific to the role, also be sure to highlight your time management, communication, collaboration, and tech skills, especially with common remote work tools and software,” recommended Sylvester.

You can put these qualifications in your core competencies section as well as include specific information in your career history that demonstrates your remote work skills.

“If you have experience in remote positions, make sure that’s clear on your resume. Add the word ‘Remote’ after your job titles,” said Sylvester. “Also, think about remote-specific accomplishments you could highlight, like managing a team that exceeded performance goals despite being in different locations.”

Is there a specific resume format for remote jobs?

“Because being tech-savvy is important for remote jobs, make sure the design and layout of your resume conveys that,” said Sylvester. “Use ample white space, a modern and easy-to-read font like Arial or Calibri, and a touch of color if you like.”

Should you put your address on a remote job resume?

“You’ll need to provide your full address later on the application process, though initially, you really only need to include your city, state, and ZIP code on your resume for a remote job,” Sylvester advised. At the very least, it’ll be helpful for the hiring manager to know what your time zone is for scheduling interviews.

Updating your resume for remote work won’t take a ton of time and energy, but it’s worth the effort to promote yourself as the best-possible candidate for the position.
