They prepare and submit claims, follow up on unpaid claims, track claim status, review and appeal denied claims, and manage patient's billing accounts. A Medical Biller should also be proficient in using medical billing software and understand insurance procedures, coding, and billing. Medical Billers often hold a Certified Professional Biller (CPB) certification, which validates their expertise and commitment to the field. Prior to becoming a Medical Biller, an individual might have roles such as a Medical Secretary, Medical Receptionist, or Medical Records and Health Information Technician to gain the necessary experience and knowledge in the healthcare administration field.
